The Sustainable Building Advisor Certificate Program
The Sustainable Building Advisor Certificate Program is a nine-month, specialized training program, designed to enable graduates to advise employers or clients on strategies and tools for implementing sustainable building.

• Identify and articulate the key practices of sustainable building.
• Apply LEED™ and other relevant criteria or established guidelines.
• Analyze the costs and benefits of incorporating sustainable building measures.
• Work with architects, designers, builders, building operators, and utilities to improve a building’s performance.
• Learn about financial incentives and technical assistance offered by governments, utilities and non-profit organizations.
• Develop sustainable design goals for project development.

Registering for CCE courses
Students taking classes offered through Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE) are not required to
formally apply for admission to the college.
To register for a non-credit or CCE courses held on campus:
1. Print out the registration form and fill in your course selections
a. Be sure to include the CRN number and course title
b. Payment for CCE classes must be made at the time of registration so be sure to include
payment information on your form
2. Submit the registration form:
a. In person at the Records Office on either campus (if you paying by check, cash or credit card)
b. Via Fax to (203) 285-2422 or (203) 285-2018 (Visa or MasterCard payment only)

To register for CCE “ed2go” courses, log onto www.ed2go.com/gateway to select your course and then
call the CCE office at (203) 285-2080 to make arrangements for your online selections.
Refund Policy (including credit and credit-free courses)
If any course is canceled, students will receive a full refund of tuition and fees. A full refund of tuition (not
fees) will be made if written notice of withdrawal is received in the Office of Business and Industry
Services no later than the last business day of the college preceding the first scheduled class day. No
refund will be made after this date. Students who paid with Mastercard and VISA will receive their
refund by check. Charge cards will not be credited. Allow at least 45 days for payment of refunds.
Course Cancellation
Students who register for a course that is later canceled will be notified and given an opportunity to select
another course. If the student does not choose another course, a full refund of tuition and fees will be
made.

This Friday afternoon seminar provides instruction in best strategies and practices in the development of a step-by-step “green” business plan, taught by financial management experts. Participants in this program will write and present a sustainable business proposal as a class exercise.
The transition to a greener economy will separate successful businesses from failures. The new bottom line will in large part come from energy efficiencies resulting from energy conservation and highly efficient architectural, transportation, and structural designs and the use of renewable and recyclable energy generation systems. Most organizations will have sustainability officers to guide the development of sustainable business practices. The question looms, “how do we get there?”
Sustainable Business Development is a hands-on, mentored and practical seminar series designed for established and new businesses seeking to create new business activities in the emerging green economy. Participants will learn practical business development and leadership skills, and will write and present their own business plan proposals as final class projects.
Special attention will be focused on the business development opportunities provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and other federal government programs that seek community collaboration and partnerships targeting local economic development.

The course will include interactive presentations by expert practitioners, onsite visits, and exercises that address issues, innovative strategies, and successful practices in sustainable business formation. Innovative business concepts and strategies will be assessed to determine the viability of incubating businesses to generate a vibrant new local economy.

Grant Proposal Writing for Workforce and Economic Development
This early Friday afternoon seminar series will explore and coach students through the process of preparing and submitting a grant proposal, placing emphasis on funding opportunities through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), other federal and state programs, foundations, and other sources.
As of August 5, 2009 there were over 34,000 active federal grant opportunities. Hundreds of private foundations add more opportunities every week. Every year there are millions of dollars just waiting for the right projects. Is your project one of them? This course is designed to help you develop and write successful grant proposals. Topics include:
· Sources of Grant Money (federal, state, community, foundation, corporate, other)
· Types of Grants
· Project Identification – Needs and benefits (solutions-based projects)
· “Best Fit” Analysis – Match your project to SGA requirements
· Project Design – Concept, development, delivery, evaluation, and more
· Writing the Grant Proposal – Step-by-step process in writing a fundable proposal
The goal of this course is for each participant to complete a first draft of a grant proposal.
This program brings together crucial concepts for creating the partnerships, the innovative ideas, the leadership strategies, and the valued organizational growth and sustainability represented by well-constructed grant proposals.

Sustainable Health and Living
The everyday effects of climate change and the measures we can take to make our daily living practices more sustainable can improve the length and quality of life. This course examines the effects on life caused by the buildings in which we live, our transportation and food systems, the products we buy, our energy sources, community landscaping, urban design, and architecture, and how we deal with waste and recycling. Practicalgreen measures we can implement to make our lives and our communities more sustainable will be examined. Participants will develop a comprehensive package of green measures that may demonstrate financial, health, and environmental benefits in the following objective aspects of sustainable life:
Buildings (design, construction and demolition)
Healthy Indoor Living
Sustainable Aspects of Wellness
Transportation
Food and Nutrition (growing, processing & packaging, retail, etc.)
Clothing and Consumer Goods (from sourcing of raw materials to final disposal)
Renewable Energy Sources
Communities (urban design, walkability, density, social needs etc)
Waste and Recycling
The course will cover green trends in consumer shopping and the affect of the food we eat and the consumer products we buy on us and on our planet. Brainstorming sessions will consider issues raised and propose alternative solutions. A class exercise will list and prioritize problems and solutions and compile a final report.

Sustainable Operations Credit Certificate Programs (Under Development)
Gateway Community College now offers credit courses in Sustainable Operations. These courses will count toward credit certificate programs currently under development by the Divisions of Corporate and Continuing Education and Engineering and Applied Technologies.
The program design shared by these new certificate programs includes innovative features:
1) Curricula that follow content and skill recommendations of business and industry.
2) “Hands-on” practical skill training.
3) Preparation to take a Certificate of Knowledge exam after one semester of combined classroom and skilled operations study, as applicable.
4) Academic, technical, and social skills geared to each student’s needs integrated into the skill requirements for these occupations.
